Reno’s first Duct Tape Cardboard War took place Friday at Idlewild Park. Converting lush turf into a battlefield, the first-year attendance was high with a great deal of variety in cardboard weapons and armor. Skill level in hand-to-hand combat also saw a range from expert to total novice — though, in the chaos of battle, even the experts could be taken out with a little luck and team work.

The battles took the form of two opposing sides, red versus blue, charging at one another. Three hits and you’re out. Not to worry if you got out early — another charge would take place in only a few minutes.

Safety First

“All weapons will be inspected before being approved to enter the field,” organizers said of the many creative, DIY cardboard swords and shields that made it into the event. “No weapons may contain metal of any form, wood, staples, heavy dense materials or sharp edges.”

While each battle was not particularly long, they were intense, with combatants blocked and attacked with speed and intent. Only a few sweat-glistening warriors could claim victory in the end.

If you wanted a more personal battle, two sparing circles in volleyball courts allowed amateurs to challenge experts to one-on-one combat.

The event raised money for the Wounded Warrior Project. View the photos below.
