The High Fives 4th Annual Bocce Tournament presented by Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, GoPro and the Truckee River Winery took place on Sunday, September 23 and raised $6,000 for the High Fives Foundation Winter Empowerment Fund. The Fund provides financial support to injured winter action sports athletes, assisting them through the recovery process. Additionally, the Fund helps injured athletes achieve their goals in order to thrive as disabled athletes participating in winter adaptive sports.
“The event raised $6,000 compared to $4,000 in 2011,” said Roy Tuscany, High Fives Foundation co-founder and president. “I look forward to growing the event in 2013 and raising more money to help injured athletes in need.”
To date, the Winter Empowerment Fund has assisted 33 athletes in eight respective funding categories which include: living expenses, insurance, travel, health, High Fives Healing Network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and stoke (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
Tournament winners include: first place “Gimme 5 Mins.,” Adam Mahoney and Steve Wallace; second place “Outdoor Technology #2,” KC Deane and Jen Hudak; third place “Woodward Tahoe,” Mr. & Mrs. Jon Slaughter; fourth place “Every Bocce Wang Chung Tonight,” Nick Baron and Dave Nagengast; and fifth place “Team #43,” Jim Nemeth and James Fralick.
“As the first injured athlete to receive support from High Fives in 2009, I know first-hand just how important it is to raise money for the Foundation.” said Steve Wallace “Gimme 5 Mins.” team member and High Fi
ves’ first Winter Empowerment Fund recipient. “The events the Foundation coordinates are fun; fun with a purpose to help change people’s lives and get them back on track to compete at a professional level. Winning this year’s tournament is the icing on the cake.”
Participants enjoyed fine wine from the Truckee River Winery, as well as food from the Full Belly Deli, cheese from Cabot Creamery Cooperative and sushi from Mamasake Squaw’s Food Truck.
The next High Fives Foundation fundraising event will be the 2nd Annual Truckee Dodgeball Tournament. It is scheduled for October 21 at 10 a.m. at the Truckee Airport. Details will be available at www.highfivesfoundation.org.
