Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) continues to encourage student success with educational programs that cultivate academic achievement and viability. In July 2011, 100 percent of students in TMCC’s veterinary technician program who took the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) received passing scores. By passing this national exam, students are now eligible to pursue licensing and become practicing veterinary technicians.

“These impressive pass rates represent just how exceptional this program and its students are,” said Jim New, associate dean of applied science at TMCC. “While the veterinary technician program is rigorous, these students continue to be persistent in their studies allowing them to achieve remarkable things.”

TMCC’s two-year veterinary technician program requires students to illustrate a complete understanding of animal anatomy and physiology, laboratory procedures, medical and surgical nursing skills and knowledge regarding a variety of animal species. Technicians are responsible for the nursing care and well-being of animals in a veterinary hospital. These responsibilities may include surgical preparation and assisting, inducing and monitoring anesthesia, collecting and analyzing lab samples, educating clients, producing x-rays and performing dental exams.

Licensed veterinary technicians are prepared for career fields in nursing care at general or private veterinary clinics, higher education and pet food and drug companies. Technicians may also work for state and local governments and research facilities.
