U.S. Department of Commerce estimates one job created for every $181,000 in exports
(CARSON CITY, Nev. – The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced that Nevada exports for the first half of 2011 were up 20 percent over the same period in 2010, resulting in an increase in exports of nearly $600 million. This increase in exports in the past year supported approximately 3,300 new jobs in Nevada.
“Nevada ranking first among all states in Export Growth is a strong indication that we are a major player on the global export stage,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “We are working hard to make Nevada the ideal place to locate and grow businesses.”
There is increasing consumer demand for quality toys, games, sporting equipment, photographic goods and beverages/spirits in developing countries. Regarding industrial equipment and aircraft parts, demand exists for highly advanced technology products in developing countries. As a result of the high level of demand Nevada exports have increased.
The top performers in product related exports include: toys, games and sporting equipment, up 23 percent; industrial equipment including computers, up 48 percent; photographic goods, up 18,628 percent; aircraft and spacecraft parts, up 84 percent; and beverages and spirits, up 120 percent.
In the first half of 2011, Nevada companies exported to 163 countries around the world. In looking at the world regions, the majority of the State’s exports, 66 percent go to Switzerland, Canada and China.
”The Nevada Commission on Economic Development has a division responsible for providing technical assistance to Nevada companies looking to enter the global marketplace,” said Alan DiStefano, director of global business development for NCED. “Companies interested in entering the export market or looking to grow their exports should take advantage of these services.”
This solid growth pattern in exports reinforces two recent reports on Nevada’s exports. The “U.S. Export Adaptability at the State Level,” from Ball State University, Indiana, ranked Nevada number one in export adaptability, or the ability to quickly adapt the export of its products to the new emerging markets around the world. This report also ranked Nevada number one in the export of products key to the rapidly developing new technology markets worldwide.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “Enterprising States-Recovery and Renewal for the 21st Century,” ranked Nevada number one in both export intensity growth and export growth, and ninth in growth in share of national exports.
