Food drive season kicks off with barrel pick-up on Thursday

Date:

Northern Nevada Food Bank this week is gearing up for holiday food drives with a drive-by barrel pick-up on Thursday, Nov. 4 from 3-5 p.m. at Grand Sierra Resort. Organizations planning to host a food drive can pre-register this week before getting their collection bins.

Food Bank officials said the nonprofit helps about 107,000 people each month with emergency food and services—nearly 21 million meals in the last fiscal year. The holiday food drive helps the agency collect non-perishable items. Canned meals, proteins, fruits and veggies, grains, baby formula and food, and shelf-stable dairy are most needed, officials said.

Organizations that want to host a traditional food drive can help the Food Bank save resources by picking up the barrels at the drive-by event, said the Food Bank’s Jocelyn Lantrip.

A second option this year is for groups to host a virtual food drive, collecting money instead of food items. The Food Bank uses those funds to purchase fresh foods for families.
