Reno’s Battle of the Badges Blood Drive took place Wednesday at Greater Nevada Field. Local law enforcement and fire departments promoted the event in an effort to “win” by getting the most votes from donors.
While only in its second year at the ballpark, the drive increased its number of donors from 50-ish individuals to more that 70 at last count.
Nicole Frosini of United Blood Services explained that summer is an important time for this drive as the need for blood donations increases. Unfortunately, blood donations generally decrease during the summer months as well, as people are often busy during that time.
Donor Stefany Alas, who was visiting Reno from Las Vegas, said that even though she was flying back to Las Vegas that day she wanted to make a donation.
Hospitals in the Reno area go through and average of 150 pints of donated blood per day, according to Frosini. To donate blood visit https://bloodhero.com/index.cfm?group=op&es=true&advancedSearch=true
