SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

RENO, Nev. — University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s (UNCE) free learning series, Coffee with Friends, will present “Be Ember Prepared,” a Living with Fire class from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., May 5, at the UNCE office at 5305 Mill St.

Natural Recourse Specialist Ed Smith will discuss areas of the house and surrounding landscape that are vulnerable to falling embers. During a wildfire, thousands of embers can rain down on your roof and pelt your home like a hailstorm. If these embers become lodged in something easily ignited like debris in rain gutters or wooden roof shingles, the potential results can be devastating.

Smith said it is up to homeowners to protect their homes from falling embers.

“Too often it’s the homeowner’s belief that fire protection is someone else’s problem to fix when in reality there are many things the homeowner is responsible for,” Smith said. “Ensuring your home is ember prepared is one of the most important things.”

The “Be Ember Prepared” presentation will be the last Coffee with Friends event of the season.  New presentations will not take place until after the growing season.

Students will receive one Master Gardener education credit, one Nursery Worker Training unit and one Certified Landscape Technician point for attending the event.
