WINNEMUCCA —  The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, working closely with the Nevada Land Conservancy in Reno, Nev., acquired approximately 1,300 acres of land in the Little High Rock Canyon, Poodle Mountain and Hardin City areas, within and nearby the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area.

BLM purchased the land under Round 8 of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA).  The escrow for the purchase closed on April 22, 2010.

“With the addition of approximately 1,300 acres of environmentally sensitive land near Little High Rock Canyon, Poodle Mountain and Hardin City, the Winnemucca BLM District is honored to add these lands to our treasured landscapes,” said Gene Seidlitz, District Manager.  “BLM appreciates the owners’ willingness to sell their land to ensure the protection of the environmental resources for the betterment of the public.”

“Good things come in small packages,” said Alicia Reban, President of the Nevada Land Conservancy.  “One of the gems inside this package is property in the Little High Rock Canyon Wilderness.  Several hundred acres of land and water in the Little High Rock Creek are now owned by BLM for the benefit of the public.  To protect the land is wonderful—to keep the water with the land is divine.”

The BLM is authorized to sell land in the Las Vegas Valley under the authority of the 1998 SNPLMA, as amended.  SNPLMA authorizes funds from those sales to be used, in part, for the purchase of environmentally sensitive lands throughout Nevada.
