Reno Little Theater’s latest production, “Support Group for Men,” follows four men during their weekly Thursday night ritual, where they essentially hold a feelings circle. While not everyone is completely sold on the concept, the ritual prompts the men to speak about their repressed feelings and fears. They’re interrupted by an altercation in the alley outside, and an unexpected new member joins their group.

Described as a dramedy, “Support Group for Men” has more serious than comedic moments. However, whenever Eduardo Arce-Gutierrez took center stage as Kevin, you were guaranteed a good laugh. He was arguably the most positive and open-minded character in the play, allowing for well-needed breaks between the heavier moments.

Bradford Kai’ai’ai’s character, Roger, was the most dynamic. Kai’ai’ai’s performance was stellar. As Roger began to lean into modern ways of thinking, the shift felt natural rather than forced. That being said, his performance early on could be difficult to digest because of all the self-hatred Roger carries.

The first act ends with the group going on an accidental peyote trip. While humorous, the shift was drastic and confusing. Because of this, the start of the second act felt more like a fever dream. It was hard to re-immerse myself in the world of this story, but by the end, I was able to get there again.

While the performance finds its footing once more, it ends with a clunky #MeToo movement reference. “Support Group for Men” is set in 2016, when the movement first gained mainstream media attention. While it ties into the other themes of the performance, mentioning it once at the end instead of incorporating it more throughout made it feel like it was trying to be “woke” for the sake of it.

While the story could be stronger, it’s clear how all-encompassing each actor was in their performance. From physical acting to deep emotional moments, you are sure to be entertained.
