Reno Little Theater kicks off its 90th season with a “POTUS,” a hilarious performance spotlighting Oval Office chaos. In the play, audience members follow a cast of seven women during a day in the White House.
The story begins when the fictional president says something unfavorable about his wife, causing an uproar among journalists and politicians. The staff must keep the day moving and gain back the public’s favor. The task is much easier said than done, though, especially after an even bigger disaster occurs.
With a title like “POTUS,” I was nervous this play would be hyper-political and potentially unenjoyable. Luckily, this wasn’t the case. The fictional president is intentionally left unnamed and non-partisan. There are still serious themes explored, but the main criticisms are against the patriarchal system rather than any specific political party. These deeper moments are still full of absurdity and humor.
The performances of the all-female cast elevated this story. At times it felt like I was watching a movie, where actors are given countless chances to nail a scene, rather than a live-performance. The dedication to honoring these characters makes them feel real. Audience members are sure to connect with more than one of them and will undoubtedly feel warm at seeing their efforts to work together.
Reno Little Theater’s “POTUS” promises a hilarious performance that is sure to leave you feeling perhaps a little less angst amidst this election season.
