Spencer Gear, the Las Vegas man who terrorized state park rangers, teens receiving scholarships and former Gov. Steve Sisolak, is facing new criminal charges. Gear was indicted on 22 counts by a federal grand jury for allegedly threatening to murder federal judges and state employees around the U.S.
“The citizens we rely on to serve the public must be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “The Justice Department has no tolerance for acts and threats of violence targeting public servants, and we will stop at nothing to find and bring to justice those responsible.”
Gear is alleged to have made threatening phone calls and threats of assault and murder to eight federal officials. He was arrested on July 23, 2024, and, if convicted, faces up to 10 years in prison for each count of threatening federal officials and five years for each count of making threats of injury.
Gear, in 2021, attended a scholarship giveaway by Gov. Sisolak, where he was arrested by Nevada State Parks rangers on charges of intimidating public officers and resisting arrest. He was alleged to have threatened the park rangers after disrupting the “Vax Nevada Days” event with a bullhorn.
“The FBI will not tolerate individuals who threaten government officials for doing their jobs and who create a climate of fear,” said the FBI’s Robert Wells. “As this case demonstrates, we will work with our partners to investigate and hold accountable all those who threaten or interfere with government officials as they carry out their duties.”
The Reno Gazette Journal reported that Gear was also worked on attorney Joey Gilbert’s campaign for governor.
A jury trial is scheduled for September. Gear’s Facebook account in 2021 had several homophobic and anti-vaccination posts.
