Fire heavily damaged a single building by the Sparks rail yard Wednesday night around 10 p.m. A large white plume of smoke billowed over the area, large enough that eyewitnesses could see it from downtown Reno and surrounding areas.

Firefighters from Truckee Meadows Fire District reported that the fire was largely under control by 10:45 p.m. but was still being put out in small pockets.

Sparks Fire Marshal Chris McCubbins said the cause of the fire still under investigation. A security guard who works next door to the damaged property was near the scene and told investigators that the area is at times frequented by people who are homeless. However, it’s unconfirmed if that was the case Wednesday night.

Potential damage to the wood-framed building is estimated from $30,000-$40,000 due to structural and roof damage. There were no reports of casualties or injuries from the fire.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to attribute the eyewitness report.
