Local Band Alert: ThisisReno takes a closer look at local bands in this series of 5-minute interviews. This week we chat with Unchained.

There’s a new band in town, they call themselves Unchained (a tribute to Alice in Chains). From the band’s Reverbnation page they describe themselves as “a band of brothers dedicated to excellent musicianship, their love of Lane Staley-era Alice In Chains, and a desire to entertain the masses through Alice In Chains music.”

Current band members include, Thierry Scott (lead vocals), Edgar Beltran (lead guitar), Mike Tourin (guitar, vocals), Josh Fanjeaud (bass, vocals), and Dan Wells (drums, vocals).

I’ve seen this band play, and although they’ve only played a handful of shows so far their ability to perform the catalog of such a great band as well as they do shows that each band member is really dedicated to their craft and the desire to play these songs to the best of their ability. These guys are well worth a look see if you like the music of Alice in Chains.

Recently I was lucky enough to ask the band some questions via an online interview.

ThisisReno: Who came up with the band name and logo?

Unchained: Thierry Scott

TIR: How did the band get started and who came up with the idea of doing an Alice in Chains tribute band?

Unchained: Thierry Scott and Josh Fanjeaud. Thierry has played with several types of bands in the Reno area and had an idea that a tribute band would do well in a place like Reno (and beyond). Thierry found someone like-minded in Josh Fanjeaud and together they built Unchained.

TIR: What other bands have the guys played in before starting this one, if any?

Unchained: All band members have played with other acts in the area of various types. Original and cover bands: Thierry – Reno-based Apathy, Undenied, Black Sunday; Josh – Reno-based Seductive Rage, Godless Heathens; Dan – Santa Cruz-based hip hop outfit Eliquate for 7 years; Edgar – Reno-based The Sins, Fusion Delux, Hardtail775; Mike Tourin – Reno-based Black Sunday (played with Thierry in this band), Dead Animal Heads.

TIR: Where do you see the band going in the future?

Unchained: We have said from the beginning that with our collective love for Alice In Chains that is shared by millions of fans, we believe there is an opportunity for Unchained to bring Alice In Chains music to the masses.

TIR: What do you think of the Reno Music scene?

Unchained: We love Reno because we live here, and we are doing our part to help the music scene improve. We believe the Reno music scene has potential, but definitely needs some help growing in the right ways.

If you want to see these guys tear it up live go to their Facebook page and see where they are rocking next, you’ll be glad you did.

And always support your local bands and venues … Go to a Show!

John Tuckness has been photographing rock concerts in the Reno/Sparks/Tahoe area and as far as Northern California since 2004. He tries to attend as many shows as he can. John knew he wanted to be a concert photographer when he went to his first concert, Kiss and Montrose way back in 1976. He saw three guys shooting the show and thought to himself, "that's what I want to do." After many years of undercover work (sneaking his camera into venues), he finally got noticed and started getting photo passes through PR people and the bands. John has had many of his photos published in newspapers, websites and band autobiographies.
