Shortly before 4:30, the Reno Police Department responded to multiple calls of a helicopter crash at 255 West Fifth Street.
Once on scene it was learned that crash involved a glider, not a helicopter. Initial reports indicate the lone pilot left from the Gardnerville/Minden airport this morning, and as he was returning to Minden via Reno, he encountered severe winds that sheared the wings from his airplane.
The pilot was wearing a parachute and was able to successfully deploy it. He received minor injuries from the accident and was treated and released on scene.
The fuselage landed in the parking lot at255 West Fifth Street. One wing was located at Dick Taylor park. The second wing’s location is unknown. The Reno Police Department is seeking assistance in locating the other wing. Anyone who may come across it please contact the Reno Police Department.
The Reno Police Department is in contact and working with the FAA and NTSB. The local office of the FAA will have an agent respond to the scene to begin their investigation into the accident.
