Urban Roots is working with the Great Basin Community Food Coop to offer a family based educational workshop.

Eight families whose children attend Urban Roots’ educational programs such as Farm Camp and Farm School will tour the Coop on Thursday, October 9, 2014, from 5 to 7 pm. Families will participate in hands-on activities to learn tips to prepare nutritionally balanced meals.

The tour will focus on creative meal planning utilizing seasonally appropriate fresh vegetables from local sources.

“The goal of the workshop is to encourage families to explore healthy alternatives on a budget,” said Jenny Angius, scholarship coordinator at Urban Roots.

Families will be challenged to consider time and costs to make healthy meals for the family from the Coop’s organic bulk section. With tips gained from this workshop, Urban Roots and the Great Basin Community Food Coop hope to make our local food system welcoming and accommodating to families needs.

This will be the first of upcoming workshops to provide a link from Urban Roots’ education programs, to local farms and organic sources, to families’ plates across our community.

The program has been made possible with support from generous grants and donations. Scholarship families participating in the tour will also receive a year-long membership to the Coop and a $50 grocery food stipend so that they are able to implement new ideas that they’ve learned.
