Nevada Historical Society to hold docent training Sept. 20

Date:

Whether your interest is in historical manuscripts and photo collections, artifacts or research, the Nevada Historical Society has a role for those willing to volunteer for the state’s oldest cultural institution. Fall training for those interested in becoming docents runs from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at the Nevada Historical Society, 1650 N. Virginia St., on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Docents work in all areas of the museum, including the museum store, admissions office, research library and the galleries. They receive training to conduct gallery and outreach tours from fellow mentors who donate their time. They are asked to volunteer at least four hours per month. With Nevada’s 150th birthday celebration about to kick-off, the Historical Society is preparing for a busy year.

“Our docents make it possible for us to serve people from all over the world who use our diverse collection materials that are important to Nevada’s history,” Shery Hayes Zorn, acting director of the Historical Society, said. “We have become a family with lasting friendships along the way.”

The Historical Society is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and the research library is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Free parking passes are available. Details: Shery Hayes Zorn, 775-688-1190, ext. 222 or [email protected].
