RPD NEWS — This morning at about 0438 hours, an Officer Involved Shooting (hereinafter “OIS”) occurred in the 300 block of Scorpio Circle in south Reno. The agency involved in the shooting was the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office had responded to the listed location on call from a citizen/complainant who was reporting that an unknown suspicious male was on his property and attempting to force entry into his residence. As they arrived in the area, Deputies located an adult male resembling the description of the suspicious subject near the complainant’s residence. While investigating the suspicious male’s activities in the area, the two responding Deputies were involved in a shooting.
There were no injuries to any of the Deputies. However, the suspicious male suffered gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The male subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The decedent in this case has been identified as Layne Michael Campbell, a Reno resident.
The two Deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. This is a routine and normal occurrence in any case where an Officer/Deputy has discharged a firearm and one or more bullets strike a human being. The same practice is followed in virtually every jurisdiction in the United States.
Pursuant to the Washoe County OIS Protocol, the OIS investigation will be conducted by multiple local law enforcement agencies (RPD, SPD and WCSO), with the Reno Police Department being the lead agency.
When the preliminary investigation is complete it will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for an initial determination as to whether the shooting was justified under Nevada Law. If the shooting initially appears justified, the Deputies can be returned to duty, pending the completion of the OIS investigation and a final determination as to justification by the District Attorney’s Office.
In order to ensure the fairness and integrity of the investigation no further media comment will be made by police personnel. Upon completion of the preliminary review further information will be released, as well as a final report, after the investigation and final review are complete.
