Public invited to hear national health care speaker

SelbyUNIVERSITY OF NEVADA NEWS RELEASE — Nevadans interested in learning about the changing landscape of health care are invited to attend a free presentation by Joe V. Selby, M.D., MPH, executive director of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute in Washington, DC in either Reno or Las Vegas later this month.

The Reno event will be held on Monday, March 25 at its new location in the Joe Crowley Student Union, Ballroom A on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and is sponsored by the Division of Health Sciences at UNR.

The Las Vegas event will be held on Tuesday, March 26 at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, 888 W. Bonneville Avenue and is sponsored by the University of Nevada School of Medicine, the Cleveland Clinic, the Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition and the Clark County Medical Society. A reception at 5:30 p.m. precedes the 6 p.m. presentation at both locations.

Dr. Selby’s discussion includes the following: his organization’s mission and how it relates to and supports current health reform initiatives; how the national research agenda for PCORI is charting a clear path to research that involves patients and stakeholders and produces information about the best available evidence to help patients and their health care provider make more informed choices; and what types of patient-centered questions PCORI set out to answer, the research projects that have been funded and details about upcoming funding opportunities.

Dr. Selby is the first executive director of PCORI and comes to the organization with a background as a family medicine physician clinical epidemiologist and health services researcher with more than 35 years experience in patient care, research and administration. He joined PCORI in 2011 from Kaiser Permanente, Northern California where he was director of the Division of Research. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and continues to conduct research in the areas of diabetes outcomes and quality improvement.
