SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE
October is Breast Health Awareness month, and as Nevada’s first accredited breast center, Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer is offering discounted screening mammograms for $100 through December 2011. Breast health is essential to maintaining optimal health and wellness, and Saint Mary’s encourages individuals to participate in preventive healthcare measures.
“It is fundamental that women are proactive about breast health so abnormalities are detected early,” said Patty Sredy, administrative director of oncology at Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer. “Wellness screenings can be the best prevention tool and regular self exams and annual mammograms are simple and effective methods.”
Women are encouraged to receive annual mammograms beginning at age 40. The screening can help detect breast cancer early and is a vital component to preventive health. Patients who schedule appointments prior to Saturday, Dec. 31, will receive a discounted screening mammogram, which includes the radiologist fee, for only $100.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, with approximately one in eight women developing breast cancer in their lifetime. In Dec. 2010, Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer received accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), naming the Center as the first and only accredited program in the state of Nevada. Since then, Saint Mary’s has conducted more than 12,500 mammograms, surpassing national standards.
The Center for Cancer also offers patients enhanced support options through a breast cancer nurse navigator. Nurse navigators offer guidance, education, support and assistance, ensuring a patient’s experience is comfortable and the patient receives quality care. Additionally, navigators work closely with patients and their families, making certain they understand their options and receive the emotional support needed to maneuver through the treatment process. This guidance helps give patients the strength and confidence to complete treatment.
