BATTLE MOUNTAIN — Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District partnered with Lander County Road and Bridge and several volunteers to complete a successful National Public Lands Day (NPLD) project. The project consisted of revamping the Mill Creek Campground located 20 miles south of Battle Mountain on Highway 305.
It was a two day event, Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24. Day one consisted of Lander County Road and Bridge and the BLM coming together to gravel parts of each camp site and setting a new concrete picnic table, a concrete garbage facility and placing large rocks in key areas to distinguish parking in individual campsites. Heavy equipment was used to accomplish this portion of the project.
Day two of the project found volunteers and BLM employees working together to put in new fire rings, lantern hooks, and poles for barbeques. The barbeques will be placed on the poles at a later date, after the concrete has set well. Several new campsites were created along with a new community site. There are now 13 individual campsites, one double campsite and one community campsite. The parking at most campsites will accommodate RVs or can be used for tent camping with a parking spot for your vehicle. At the lower end of the campground are tent only campsites.
The BLM would like to thank Lander County Road & Bridge for the skilled work they did in getting the campsites ready for the volunteers to work on. They have been, and continue to be, a great partner in this project.
BLM would also like to thank the volunteers that came out. Without the tremendous amount of work this group of people did, this project would not have been as successful as it was. BLM provided a barbequed lunch and a NPLD T-shirt for each volunteer.
Mill Creek Campground is your campground and the BLM hopes that you will take the time to go check out the changes. We also hope you will enjoy it and take care of it. The project is not yet completed but it is open for use.
