Nevada’s First Day of Issue flag covers released April 21

WHAT:           Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons will host the official unveiling of Nevada’s new “Flags of Our Nation” stamp issued by the United States Postal Service in a ceremony with Postal Service officials. The public is invited to attend the event which features a presenting of the colors by Nevada’s Air National Honor Guard and the singing of the National Anthem and Nevada’s state song by the Seeliger Elementary School Children’s Choir followed by a free public reception at the Nevada State Museum and the opportunity to purchase first day of issue covers.

DETAILS: 

  • The U.S. Postal Service continues its Flags of Our Nation series by releasing 10 more stamp designs that feature the Stars and Stripes plus nine states, including Nevada. 
  • This release is the fourth set in the Postal Service Flags of Our Nation series. 
  • Seating at the State Capitol for the unveiling ceremony is limited and people are encouraged to arrive early. 
  • First day of issue covers will be for sale by the Postal Service at the Nevada State Museum following the ceremony on April 21. 
  • In addition to stamp purchase, visitors can view a special exhibit of Nevada State flags and historic stamps on display at the Nevada State Museum specifically for this event only. 
  • Alongside the flag art, each stamp design includes artwork that provides a “snapshot view” of the state or other area represented by a particular flag. 
  • Artist Tom Engeman, a resident of Bethany Beach, Delaware, created the highly detailed flag portraits and snap show views on the stamps. 

The Nevada State Museum is one of seven managed by the state Division of Museums and History, an agency of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department serves Nevada’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, presentation and promotion of cultural resources, and education. The Department also includes the State Office of Historic Preservation, Nevada State Library and Archives and the Nevada Arts Council.
