The University of Nevada, Reno will be featuring the following events this week:
Invisible Children Tour – Monday, Sept. 21
The “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” film exposes the effects of a 20-year-long war on the children of Northern Uganda. Children who live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers, and are being forced to fight as part of a violent army. This documentary is fast-paced, with an MTV beat, and is truly unique. To see Africa through young eyes is humorous and heart breaking, quick and informative. The “Invisible Children” tour will be stopping by the University with a public screening of the documentary to begin at noon and run until 2 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater, 3rd Floor.

Nevada GEAR UP Day Celebration – Tuesday, Sept. 22
Gaining Early Awareness and Education for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) celebrates eight years of helping improve the educational outcomes for low-income students and first generation college students throughout Nevada, which have included many of the University’s students involved with the Dean’s Future Scholars program. To commemorate nearly a decade of helping Nevada’s students succeed academically and in life, a recognition celebration with GEAR UP scholars and supporters is scheduled at 11 a.m. at the Wooster High School Rally Court, 1331 E. Plumb Lane. Speakers to include Heath Morrison, Superintendent, Washoe County School District, Debbie Smith, Assemblywoman, District 30, Nevada Legislature, William Sparkman, Dean, University College of Education, and others.

University Faculty Recital – Friday, Sept. 25
Join University music faculty members violinist/violist, Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio and pianist, James Winn in works by Telemann, Brahms, Ysaye and Schoenfield. This event is free and open to the public and is held in the Church Fine Arts Nightingale Concert Hall starting at 7:30 p.m.

Desert Research Institute Open House – Saturday, Sept. 26
DRI invites the greater Truckee Meadows community to attend a free open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate 50 years of science, learning and fun. Presentations will include topics such as climate change, alternative energy, human evolution and more. Greenhouses and labs will be open for viewing and exploration. DRI is located at 2215 Raggio Pkwy.
