BLM starts wild horse gather near Lovelock

Date:

WINNEMUCCA — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office is gathering horses this week in the Humboldt Herd Area (HA). The location is about 10 miles northeast of Lovelock. BLM is gathering and removing about 200 wild horses from the area.

“Wild horses have moved into the Humboldt HA from neighboring herd management areas in search of forage, water and space,” said Humboldt River Field Manager Jim Schroeder. “Due to the checkerboard land pattern found within the Humboldt HA, it is not currently managed for wild horses or burros. This gather will zero out the existing population of excess wild horses.”

The area is 431,544 acres of private and public lands. Removing the horses will help prevent further deterioration of the range and water resources, as well as address safety issues on roads and private land issues, according to BLM.

BLM is posting daily gather reports on at: http://on.doi.gov/1DFWf8d.

The gathered animals will be transported to the Oregon Wild Horse Corral Facility in Burns, Oregon where they will be prepared for the agency’s adoption program. Wild horses not adopted will be placed in long-term pastures where they will be humanly cared for and retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

The BLM said it does not sell or send any horses to slaughter.
