Northern Nevada’s KUNR Public Radio is one of seven radio stations nationwide chosen to host the StoryCorps’ One Small Step program this year. This is the second year the station will host the program, having participated in 2021 during its inaugural year.
One Small Step aims to foster understanding across America’s political spectrum by pairing individuals with differing viewpoints for 50-minute recorded conversations. These conversations are intended to emphasize shared humanity—encouraging people to take “one small step” to connect—even when participants may disagree with each other’s perspectives. The conversations will be archived at the Library of Congress and by StoryCorps.
KUNR General Manager Brian Duggan said the station is excited to be an alumni station for the program this year.
“We’ll continue our work of bringing together folks who have differing perspectives in our community so we can tell stories that highlight our shared humanity,” he said.
KUNR is partnering with Nevada Humanities and other local groups to recruit participants. They are seeking people from all backgrounds in northern Nevada to join a conversation. Applications to participate in One Small Step are online at https://www.kunr.org/one-small-step.
Duggan said the station also plans to have workshops and other training opportunities alongside One Small Step for journalism students interested in immersive reporting and community engagement.
