13 Area Schools Getting New Principals

Thirteen Washoe County School District employees have received new principal assignments for the 2018-19 school year, which starts Aug. 6:

  • Richard Mares, an accountability and parental involvement specialist, has been named principal of Rita Cannan Elementary School
  • Joel Peixoto, assistant principal at Traner Middle School, will serve as principal at Dilworth STEM Academy
  • Jeff Batavia, assistant principal at Dodson Elementary School, will serve as principal at Rollan Melton Elementary School
  • Daniel Kirk, currently serving as assistant principal at Cannan, will become principal at Natchez Elementary School
  • Melynda Brown, assistant principal at North Valleys High School, has been named principal at O’Brien STEM Academy
  • Tom Wortman, principal at Smithridge STEM Academy, has been named principal at Double Diamond Elementary School
  • Lara O’Mara will leave her position as dean of Marvin Picollo School to serve as interim principal at Picollo
  • Don Angotti, currently serving as principal at Sun Valley Elementary School, will become principal at Nick Poulakidas Elementary School, which is scheduled to open in fall 2019
  • Mike Gifford, assistant principal at Pine Middle School, will serve as principal at Shaw Middle School
  • Gina Leonhard, who currently serves as principal at Shaw, will become principal of Sky Ranch Middle School, which is scheduled to open in 2019
  • Kathy Gage, currently serving as principal at Melton, will become principal at Sun Valley Elementary
  • Laura Petersen, principal at Dilworth, will become principal of Desert Skies Middle School, which is scheduled to open in 2019
  • Mike Dixon, who served as principal at Double Diamond, will become principal at Smithridge
