The State of the Arts half-day symposium co-presented by the Nevada Museum of Art and the Community Foundation of Western Nevada provides a forum to generate meaningful discussion surrounding the state of Reno’s cultural anchors, and to identify areas of opportunity.

On Wednesday, July 29, 2015, eighteen of Northern Nevada’s arts and cultural leaders will convene at the Nevada Museum of Art to discuss the current state of the region’s arts landscape, and to identify areas of opportunity within that cultural ecosystem. Co-presented by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada and the Nevada Museum of Art, the State of the Arts half-day symposium is a free community event open to the public, though pre-registration through the Museum website is encouraged.

State of the Arts aims to generate a meaningful discussion surrounding the state of Northern Nevada’s cultural future. Given the economic momentum currently sweeping Reno, the time has never been more prudent to understand how arts and culture fits into—and helps drive–the new innovation economy. Throughout the afternoon of July 29, the conversation will exhibit how a vibrant city necessitates active participation from a constellation of cultural organizations working together to create a thriving, innovative community. An open, substantive dialogue will highlight how collaborations make a community strong.

The State of the Arts symposium runs from 1:30 to 5 pm and will address three main themes during moderated panel discussions: articulating individual organizational missions, moving education from STEM to STEAM, and economic impact. Each discussion will be moderated by a different community leader, namely Christine Fey, City of Reno Resource Development and Cultural Affairs Manager Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department; Jim Pfrommer, CPA and immediate past-president of Education Alliance of Washoe County; and Karen Craig, long-time arts consultant and founder of Creative Cities.

Participating panelists span a variety of arts and cultural disciplines from across the region: Artown, Arts for All Nevada, Brüka Theater, Burning Man, Capital City Arts Initiative, The Discovery, Inner Rhythms Dance, Holland Project, KNPB, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Nevada Museum of Art, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Little Theater, Reno Philharmonic, Sierra Arts Foundation, Sierra Nevada Ballet, St. Mary’s Art Center, and University of Nevada, Reno.

State of the Arts takes place Wednesday, July 29, 1:30 to 5 pm, at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery located at 160 West Liberty Street in downtown Reno. A reception follows the event, from 5 – 6:30 pm. To attend, please pre-register at http://bit.ly/StateoftheArts2015.

The State of the Arts is sponsored and co-presented by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada.
