Today’s visitor to Virginia City is now able to connect with the past through the future with the integration of free Wi-Fi throughout the town’s business district.
The “VC Visitor” access provides free 24-hour access with an email login for visitors.
“The Virginia City Historic District ensures that the town remains the largest National Historic Landmark in the county,” said Deny Dotson, tourism director for the Virginia City Tourism Commission. “It’s something we are very proud of, and in fact, that’s a key communication point in our marketing and social media efforts. We’re not changing that, we’re enhancing it.
“Through the generosity of a locally-based internet provider, we’re able to offer our visitors a way to connect through their smart phones, tablets or laptops and our mobile app while visiting.”
UPDATE: Reader Ky Plaskon pointed out the claim that Virginia City is the largest national historic landmark is a myth. We contacted Virginia City’s public relations agency, and this is the response:
“Virginia City is known for many myths and tales. While a majority are true, we want to always be factual and recognize that according to the article by Guy Rocha that we are not the nation’s largest historic landmark. However, that in no way discounts that Virginia City is still a must stop for history making stories, historic landmarks and a true step back in time experience.”
Virginia City’s location at 6,200 feet and 22 miles from the Reno means that online access can be spotty. The free Wi-Fi allows visitors to connect online.
Visitors can also download the “Virginia City, Nevada” mobile app that includes an audio tour of 32 historical landmarks, list of attractions, the ability to purchase event tickets and connections to social media. It is available for iOS and Google Play devices.
