Soroptomist International of the Truckee Meadows is supporting Nepal after the devastating earthquake that occurred last week. The philanthropic group has been supporting the developing country for the last 14 years, sending money and supplies to a village called Thulipakori. The area sustained major damage after last week’s quake, so Soroptomist has established an emergency relief fund, to provide for the villagers’ immediate needs of food and shelter, as well as help them sustain their village long-term.
Over the years, Soroptomist has provided funds to build a school and dormitory for over 900 girls to get the education they so desire in order to better themselves. They also support a micro-lending program for the purchase of animals and seeds to increase economic stability in the region.
Their donations now will include grants to help the families with their immediate needs of food, shelter, and water. In the short term, food, blankets, tents, and clothing will be provided to the villagers. In the long term, the money will be used to rebuild homes, replanting crops, and obtaining more livestock. All of the aid will go directly to the people without deducting administrative costs.
