NRCS Nevada has $300,000 available to assist farmers and ranchers impacted by the exceptional drought the state is experiencing.
Applications are being taken at local USDA service centers through June 19, 2015 . Projects will be evaluated based on criteria that the project can be implemented within the next six months and meet a critical need of the farm or ranch with immediate impacts.
NRCS is addressing emergency issues associated with livestock production and recovery efforts aimed at restoring or protecting lands within extreme drought areas.
“Nevada is one of the hardest hit states with significant amounts of cropland and pastures idled due to irrigation water shortages and livestock herds in dire need of water and forage. This funding will help producers maintain cover on their croplands, assist with livestock health and provide some protection for rangelands,” said Dennis Workeman, Acting NRCS State Conservationist.
Practices eligible for funding include: livestock watering systems, reseeding, prescribed grazing and deferred grazing on rangelands. Cropland and pastureland practices may include: cover crops, irrigation water conservation practices, and residue management practices to protect soils.
According to the March 12 U.S. Drought Monitor, 87 percent of Nevada is in severe, to extreme or exceptional drought.
