The Reno City Council recently approved the launch of the new Business First Program, which will assist prospective business owners through starting and launching a business in Reno.
The program, developed by the Community Development department’s Business License Division and approved by the City Council, is aimed at improving customer service and continuing to foster Reno as an attractive location for businesses.
The program will provide services throughout the process of launching a business. Business owners will have access to the Business First hotline, licensing by appointment and online services.
“I’m extremely proud of our business licensing staff for initiating this important service, which is needed in our community,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “It will be very beneficial to our local businesses, and I’m already hearing good feedback. As an entrepreneur myself, I know I would have appreciated the opportunity to hear professional advice in the early stages of starting my business.”
Customers will have access to a Business First hotline at 775-334-INFO (4636). Reno Direct operators have received training on the most frequently asked business licensing questions and can help educate callers accordingly.
Answers to most callers’ questions will be handled in one contact session. In the event that a business owner’s question needs a more in-depth answer, Reno Direct operators can instant message business licensing representatives for additional information or directly connect the customer with the appropriate representative.
Licensing by appointment will streamline the application process. Business owners will be able to schedule appointments online or by phone. A brief pre-consulting questionnaire will give City staff the opportunity to prepare for sessions and offer business owners a customized and beneficial appointment experience. Business owners will have the opportunity to review all forms and fees and ask questions regarding the licensing and approval process.
The Business First Program will transition online when the Regional Business License and Permits Program goes live in the first quarter of 2016, providing 24/7 access to the licensing process and resources. Online services will expand to give business owners the ability to apply for and renew a license, keep track of their business license application throughout the approval process, and make changes to their business information. Through this regional project, business owners will also be able to access City of Sparks and Washoe County licensing and permits information.
The Business First Program is presented by the City of Reno in partnership with the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN); Nevada Small Business Development Center; Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship; College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno; and The Chamber.
