The Washoe County Sheriffs Office is warning the public to be aware of a phone scam involving folks pretending to be calling from law enforcement organizations. The scammers are telling people there is a warrant out for their arrest with a fine attached. The scams range from failure to pay traffic tickets to owing money to the IRS. The Sheriffs Office reminds people that they will rarely make phone calls with warrants and to not give any strange callers information.

Between February 26 and March 13, the Washoe County Sheriffs Office issued 206 for various violations, including speeding, cell phone use, running a red light, failure to show proof of insurance, and more.

March 15, 2015

Dakota Cain was arrested in last week’s robberies that occurred at Paycheck Advance and Scolari’s Market. Cain was found via the surveillance tape at Scolari’s and arrested without incident. He is cooperating with authorities.

There was a fight/stabbing on South Virginia Street. The subjects were involved in a physical altercation when the victim stabbed the suspects who were beating the victim. The victim’s injuries were non-life threatening. The investigation is ongoing.

A sex offender compliance sweep was held in which the homes of more than 300 sex offenders were visited. With 20 exceptions, all were found to be in current compliance with all sex offender laws. Further investigations are being conducted on those who were found to not be in compliance. Action will be taken once they are located.

March 17, 2015

Ashleigh Schneider filed a stolen property report claiming property had been taken from her storage unit, including the ashes of her deceased child. Holly Miller, an acquaintance of Schneider’s, has been identified in the robbery. Police are currently looking for Miller, who is known to frequent downtown Reno.

March 18, 2015

Richard Kerr was sentenced to 36 to 102 months for pleading guilty to charges of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. An investigation by the Nevada Repeat Offender Unit found Kerr in violation of his bail conditions and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. Kerr has criminal history spanning from 1996 which includes 7 prior Felony convictions, all of which are non-drug related.

Douglas Hanks was arrested on one count of sexual assault with a child under 14 and one count of lewdness with a child under 14. He was also charged with one count each of open and gross lewdness and indecent/obscene exposure. The female victim was known to Hanks. He is currently being held without bail.
Peter Sandoval and four others were arrested during a 6 a.m. drug raid on Sandoval’s home after receiving a warrant. The search and arrest were handled without incident.

Frank Rucker is a registered Tier III sex offender residing in the 300 block of Grove Street. He is currently unemployed and in compliance with all sex offender laws. He is not currently wanted by law enforcement.

March 19, 2015

Jeremy Tester and Matthew Tester were arrested in Sparks on charges related to several residential and vehicle burglaries. The arrests were the results of a five month long investigation that began with a burglary in the Galena area in October 2014. Jeremy was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on one charge of burglary, one charge of grand larceny of an automobile, one count of possession of a gun with an altered/removed serial number and six counts of possession of stolen property. Matthew was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on five counts of possession of stolen property and one count of possession of a stolen vehicle.

A commercial burglary occurred on East Plumb Lane. A delivery driver arrived to find the business ransacked. The loss is currently unknown and there are no suspects at this time.

Shaun Hawkins was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle on Steamboat Parkway.

March 20, 2015

A homeless female victim was sexually assaulted under the bike bridge at Glendale and Galletti. The suspect is believed to have been driving a black Honda and is currently at large. The investigation is ongoing.
