RIVERWALK DISTRICT NEWS RELEASE – Crawls have become a staple in the Riverwalk District in downtown Reno, Nevada. Locals and tourist alike mark their calendars; spend countless hours designing costumes together, and some plan their entire months around those five to six hours of entertainment. Not too many cities offer a way to walk around, feel the community and visit various bars and restaurants in one day, on a monthly basis, but The Biggest Little City does.
Crawls give people the opportunity to be creative, support local retail shops by purchasing unique costumes all in an effort to experience an alter ego or simply as an excuse to spend time with friends. Whether you choose to enjoy a day as Wonder Woman for the Super Hero Crawl, a Pirate during the Pirate Crawl, a zombie killer for the Zombie Crawl, or simply blend into the crowd of over 10,000 Santa’s for the annual Santa crawl, the options are boundless.
If there isn’t a special event crawl, not to worry, crawls are offered each month where hundreds, if not thousands of visitors visit the area to pick their poison of beer or wine. The third Saturday of every month is the Wine Walk, where you purchase a decorative wine glass for a $20 wine-tasting fee and valid photo ID, you’ll receive a wine glass and an ID bracelet that allows you to sample wine at any of the twenty-plus participating merchant locations. Many of the businesses hand paint each individual wine glass that attendees get to take home. At the end of the event attendees enter to win over $700 in gift cards from all the participating merchants during a 5:00 p.m. raffle. The best part of this ongoing event is that portions of all the event proceeds benefit local charitable organizations. In over five years the event organizers have donated more than $65,000 to local non-profits.
On the fourth Saturday of each month you can dedicate your time to the ever-so-popular Beer Crawl, which is now celebrating it’s 5th year of operation. For a nominal $5 admission fee, you receive a commemorative Reno Beer Crawl glass, wristband and map to use throughout this self-guided event. For an additional $1 you can enjoy 6-ounce samples equaling nearly half a beer at each of the participating downtown Reno locations. The beer options are vast and unique ranging form an artisan craft beer to something more traditional. The evening caps off with a raffle giveaway at 6 p.m. where Reno Beer Crawl attendees have an opportunity to win over $400 in prizes and gift cards from participating businesses.
“The crawls turn downtown into a giant block party and you really see the community part of Reno shine,” said Karl Fendelander, a local Reno bartender.
All of the organizations work with the local Reno police department to create a safe and fun event. The groups have worked with Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN) on reducing underage drinking by initiating firm rules and regulations for the event. Patrons are asked to show I.D frequently and receive a wristband, stamp, map and commemorative glasses. In addition most if not all the crawls and walks in Reno benefit local non-profit organizations.
