Washoe County Senior Services celebrates Older Americans Month in May

Date:

WASHOE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE – The Washoe County Senior Services Department, the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, and the Incline Village General Improvement District have scheduled more than 100 events to celebrate Older Americans Month in May. This year’s theme is “Unleash the Power of Age.”

“Since 1963, May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions and achievements,” said Washoe County’s Senior Services Director Grady Tarbutton. “It is a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities.”

This year’s Older Americans Month theme, “Unleash the Power of Age,” emphasizes the important roles of older adults. Communities across the nation will recognize older Americans throughout May as productive, active and influential members of society.

The celebration begins with the opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Washoe County Senior Services located at Ninth Street and Sutro in Reno, and will feature appearances from elected officials, community leaders and musical performers. Local broadcaster Bob Carroll will emcee the event and lunch will be free for seniors over 60. In addition, more than 30 community agencies that provide services to seniors will be present to share information with those who attend.

Other events in May include hiking at Lake Tahoe at 10:00 a.m. May 7 and May 21, a performance of “Oliver” at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, and a Reno Aces game Monday, May 27.

The complete schedule of activities for Older Americans Month is available on the Washoe County Senior Services website at www.washoecounty.us/seniorsrvy . Print versions of the program will be available at senior centers, libraries, City Hall and many other locations throughout Washoe CountY. For more information, call Senior Services at 775-328-2575.
