RPD NEWS — Two men were detained this afternoon in the area of McCarran and Smithridge following a call to Reno Police reporting a vehicle burglary in progress.  Officers detained the men at about 5:30 pm in a popular shopping center parking lot and soon learned that no burglary had occurred.  Rather, the men were in the midst of scamming a woman into paying for repairs to her vehicle which consisted of duct tape and black paint, for which she was expected to pay in excess of $100.00.

One of the men turned out to be wanted out of Santa Clara County, California on a fraud warrant with a bail of $250,000.00.  The Reno Police Department would like to warn residents that scams like these are common, and that reputable car repair specialists do not contact people in parking lots at random.  If you suspect you are the target of such a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.

Arrested: Tommy JOHN, aka Tom LEE, M-11/21/71
