The young Nevada women’s golf team got off to a strong start at the Colonel Wollenberg’s Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday at Ptarmigan Country Club.
Nevada opened the three-round tournament with a 10-over 298 in the first round Monday morning and came back with a 296 in the afternoon round. The Wolf Pack enters Tuesday’s final round tied with in-state rival UNLV for fifth place at the 17-team tournament, which is hosted by Colorado State.
“We came here to see what our young team can do and get a feel to where we are,” said Pack head coach Chad Spencer. “Our young players showed today that they are ready to play. I am excited to see what they do tomorrow and how they handle themselves. This is a tough field with some really good teams.”
Sophomore Nikki Prichard led the way for the Pack with back-to-back rounds of even-par golf and she is tied for fourth in the individual race at 144. Freshman Caryn Khoo is five shots back after a 74-75. Sophomore Bethany Wurster is a shot back of Khoo at 6 over. Freshman Carly Simpson opened with a 79 but came back with a 72 in the second round and is tied for 32nd, a shot back of Wurster. Senior Louise Yi is tied for 79th.
The final 18-hole round is scheduled for Tuesday.
