HARRY REID NEWS RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Sen. Harry Reid announced a $348,330 grant to the Reno Housing Authority to help provide permanent housing for Nevada’s homeless veterans.
The award comes from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and is part of the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program, a program administered by HUD, United States Department of Veterans Affairs and local housing agencies across the country.
“No service member should have to face homelessness when they return home” said Reid. “We have a sacred responsibility to take care of those who risked their lives to defend our country, and that’s why I fought hard against Republican attempts to eliminate new funding for this critical program for Nevada’s veterans. I am pleased this grant will enable the Reno Housing Authority to offer Nevada’s homeless veterans a permanent place to live.”
Background
In 2010, Republican’s spending proposal would have eliminated new funding for the successful HUD/VASH voucher program that provides homeless veterans with a rental voucher. The Republican plan would have seriously threatened efforts to end homelessness among our nation’s veterans and would leave local providers without the resources they rely on to fight veteran homelessness.
The award to the Reno Housing Authority is part of a national effort to supply permanent housing and case management services for more than 10,000 homeless veterans across the country. U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki announced that HUD will provide $72.6 million overall to public housing agencies in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to help this effort.
