During the next few days, the City of Reno will be conducting the second phase of replacing chillers, boilers, and mechanical equipment at City Hall as part of Reno’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Initiative.
A large crane will be required for the energy efficiency retrofits. To safely complete the project, several road closures and restrictions will need to take place:
Reno City Hall:
- On Saturday, April 16 there will be no access to Reno City Hall.
Streets:
- From Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17, First Street will be closed from Virginia Street to Center Street.
- On Saturday, April 16, Virginia Street will be closed between First Street and Second Street.
City Plaza:
- On Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, the City Plaza located at the southeast corner of Virginia Street and First Street will be closed to all pedestrian traffic. Pedestrian traffic along the river will not be affected.
Lincoln Alley:
- From Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17, there will be no access from Lincoln Alley onto First Street.
APS Energy Services has partnered with the City of Reno since 2008 on renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. They serve as the general contractor for the City Hall retrofits. The entire effort for this project is being performed by local subcontractors including D&D Plumbing, Applied Mechanical Inc., Building Control Services Inc., Truckee Meadows Electric, and LSI Crane. Employing local companies for projects is remains priority for the Reno City Council.
The retrofits to City Hall will reduce the City of Reno’s energy operating costs from approximately $4.54 to $2.54 per square foot. Financing for the City of Reno’s $19.4 million Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Initiative is funded through guaranteed energy savings, Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREB’s), Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG), Qualified Energy Conservation Bonds (QECB), Recovery Zone Economic Development Bonds (RZED), NV Energy Solar Generations Rebate, and NV Energy SureBet Rebates.
Residents can track the City of Reno’s progress towards decreasing its carbon footprint by visiting the Green Energy Dashboard, http://greenenergy.reno.gov. The Dashboard provides detailed information on 11 solar and wind turbine systems that have been installed on City facilities, with new sites to be added in the coming months.
