John Ascuaga’s Nugget announces 55th annual scholarship recipients

At a time when students need it most, John Ascuaga’s Nugget is proud to continue their 55 year tradition of providing scholarships to local college-bound seniors. Since 1956, John Ascuaga and the Nugget have distributed scholarships, making it one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the state, awarding more than $600,000 dollars in educational monies to 650 area students.

This year, twenty four of the area’s best and brightest students will be honored on May 3, 2011 with an awards ceremony and luncheon in the Poolside Terrace at John Ascuaga’s Nugget. Mr. Ascuaga, along with members of his executive staff including daughter and CEO, Michonne, and son and COO, Stephen, will be on hand to greet winners and their families.

This year’s recipients are: Ashley Saarem, Carson High School; Ciara O’Driscoll, Damonte High School; Natalie Freitas, Douglas High School; Michael Clark, Douglas High School; Cody Geil-Crader, Fernley High School; Brandon Mikoleit, Hug High School; Jessica Taylor, McQueen High School; Leanne White, North Valleys High School; Camille Glanzmann, Reed High School; Jordan Fletcher, Smith Valley High School; Brenda Acevedo, Sparks High School; Samantha Burrows, Wooster High School; Matthew Aber, Wooster High School; Melissa Migel, Churchill Co. High School; Manuel Castaneda, Dayton High School; Dylan Allen, Eureka Co. High School; Daniella Geerling, Galena High School; Gregorio Bermeosolo, Lowry High School; Megan Wurm, Manogue High School; Sarah Brinkerhoff, Pershing Co. High School; Lisa Bryant, Reno High School, Steven Strozza, Spanish Springs High School; Zachary Shell, Virginia City High School; Catalina Orduna, Yerington High School.

The winners will each receive a total of $1,000, based on continued enrollment and maintaining a minimum grade-point standard. Applications were reviewed by the Nugget Scholarship Committee and evaluated on scholastic achievement, financial need, community involvement and extra-curricular activities. Past winners can be seen in an interactive kiosk located in the Nugget’s hotel lobby.
