SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The Saint Mary’s Quality in Education Awards are designed to recognize the efforts of Washoe County School District (WCSD) employees and students who have gone above and beyond to raise the quality of education in our community.  The program acknowledges outstanding teachers, exemplary employees, and students who have become role models at their school and within the community.

As part of an initiative to expand support of local schools and to recognize community members who contribute to improving education in our district, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center partnered with the WCSD to launch the award program.  Each month a selection committee chooses two award recipients, one WCSD employee and one student.  Each winner receives a check or savings bond for $250, in addition to a $2,000 donation that benefits a program of the winner’s choice at their school.

“Saint Mary’s and the WCSD share a passion for providing quality programs to our local community. Through this program we are able to honor individuals who also share this passion and show outstanding effort and leadership,” said Mike Uboldi, president and CEO of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.  “We are committed to improving education in our state and will continue to actively work with the school district as a partnering organization.”

Since the program began in late 2010, six WCSD students and teachers have been honored.  The first recipients, announced in September, were McQueen High School teacher and language department leader, Christopher Case, and Reed High School student Charlotte Hibler.  October recipients included Courtney Hurlbert, 2nd grade teacher at Double Diamond Elementary School, and Heidi Schuster, student at Reno High School.  Additionally, Pam Calhoun, math teacher at Traner Middle School and Alyssa Yocom, Wooster High School student, were selected as November’s winners.  The newest winners for January include Pleasant Valley Elementary School librarian, Stephanie Pirtle and sixth grader, Abby Woodman from Jessie Beck Elementary School.

The Saint Mary’s Quality in Education Awards is a local partnership between Saint Mary’s, the WCSD, and KOLO-TV Channel 8.  For complete rules and information on the award program or to nominate an outstanding WCSD employee, teacher or student, visit www.saintmarysqualityed.org.
