My dining companion was newly pregnant, I’m recently divorced, just the type of thing two good friends would be inclined to discuss over a leisurely Saturday lunch date. But not at Süp. Even though we declined to allow two strangers to share our table the staff seemed none too happy at our refusal and proceeded to rush us along until we finally left in just under an hour.
Hardly the experience my companion and I had hoped for.
While their delicious soups and freshly prepared sandwiches warrant the popularity of the joint, the loud, harried atmosphere was entirely off putting. I will be returning to Süp, but only to grab take out or at a very off-peak hour.
I enjoyed my Pesto Turkey sandwich with its large slices of house roasted, freshly carved turkey and mild provolone, but trying to shout at my companion over the din between bites detracted from what would have otherwise been a nearly perfect half portion.
I sampled my creamy Broccoli Cheddar soup, and while quite tasty, it wasn’t what I’d ordered and the line at the register was so long I didn’t dare brave it to get what I actually wanted. The Broccoli Cheddar was truly delicious however and I would have finished it had I not felt pressured to leave as the staff repeatedly attempted to take my plate as patrons awaiting seats stood squeezed in corners because the tiny restaurant has no waiting area. Finally, I just had them put the soup in a to-go cup.
I must admit my roommate’s thirteen-year-old daughter enjoyed every last drop of the leftovers later that day in front of our TV at home. A much more conducive atmosphere to be sure.
My dining companion was able to finish her Broccoli Cheddar, which she had indeed ordered, as well as her half portion of The Club, which she proclaimed wonderful.
As a cookie lover, I was thrilled with the little gem that garnished my plate. Glad it’s my personal policy to always eat dessert first.
In the restaurant business there is a fine balance between being popular enough to sustain business and being so popular it’s dissuasive to customers. Go to Süp, but go expecting to get take out.
