Open Streets Event Comes to Reno: Details Here

Date:

The global open streets movement comes to Reno Saturday, October 17, 2015 for RenOpen Streets. The free event, which promotes a healthy community through good air quality, active lifestyles and a booming local economy, closes down one and one-half miles of streets to vehicles and opens them up to pedestrians, cyclists, dancers and more.

The City of Reno, Washoe County Health District and Reno Bike Project collaborate on this event in an effort to spread awareness on the importance of physical activity, clean air to play in and getting out into the community to support local businesses.

The community is invited to play in the streets on a route from Riverside to Midtown and develop a new level of appreciation for what Reno has to offer. Interactive family-friendly activity stations dotted along the route are provided by local businesses and include dancing, art, food, games and more. By incorporating businesses both on and off the event route, participants become more aware of what services and products are available locally.

“This type of event captures large audiences nationwide and helps transform communities into more active, eco-friendly and economically resilient places to live,” said Julie Hunter, senior air quality specialist at the Washoe County Health District. “By opening up the streets to celebrate and play in, we can create awareness in an energetic, engaging way.”
