FINDING EVERYDAY FAITH IN A TWO-PART EXHIBITION
Opening in September, the Holland Project Gallery and the Tahoe Gallery at Sierra Nevada College will be partnering for the first time to feature, In Spite Of, a joint exhibition that explores unconscious faith and everyday beliefs.
Curated by Sarah Lillegard and featuring fourteen artists from the Northern Nevada region and across the United States, the exhibit is split between two galleries creating a cross dialogue between the spaces. While each portion of the exhibit does stand on its own, viewers are encouraged to visit both spaces as each gallery contributes different artists and aspects of the overall exhibit.
From Sept. 9-27 The Holland Project Gallery, located at 140 Vesta St. in Reno, will host In Spite Of with an opening reception on Fri. Sept. 13 from 6-8PM. Beginning at 7PM there will be a corresponding performance piece by UNR BFA student Michelle Lassaline.
Located on the third floor of the Prim Library at Sierra Nevada College, the Tahoe Gallery will host In Spite Of, Sept. 13-Oct. 25 with an opening reception Thur. Sept. 26 from 5-7PM. The reception will feature a performance piece by Kaitlin Bryson, followed at 5:45PM by a lecture with Lillegard and Nashville based folklorist, Jennifer Joy Jameson.
As the guest lecturer, Jameson will be speaking from an extensive background in folk studies and ethnography. Jameson holds a Master of Arts in Folk Studies from Western Kentucky University, founded the Nashville Folk + Free Skool and is currently a series editor for “The Art of the Rural” and visual arts editor for “The Museum of Americana: A Literary Review”. Her past lectures have discussed art environments, yard art and cultural identities and beliefs. This will be her first time speaking on the west coast.
Drawing from the region and the greater US, the exhibit will include works ranging from zines to ceramics by Charly Bloomquist, Joshua Chapman, Edw Martinez, Evie Woltil Richner, Tamara Valdez and Leigh Wells. Also included are pieces by Reno artists Kaitlin Bryson, Dane Haman, Michelle Lassaline, Kelsey Page and Omar Alan Pierce. Sierra Nevada College instructors and graduates Laura J. Bennett, Chris Lanier and Becca Jane Rubinfeld will have some of their recent work featured as well.
Combining established with emerging artists, the exhibition is an opportunity to interlace works and artists that may not be shown together in another setting.
“An exciting part of this exhibit is the diversity of the artists, their media and their experiences,” states curator Sarah Lillegard. “The work isn’t all simply what an artist may believe, but the faith that goes into art-making and evoking a type of faith in others. A number of the pieces are there for the viewer, to instill in them the sort of belief that goes unquestioned until proven wrong.”
In addition to the exhibition, performances and lectures, there will be a limited edition zine catalogue that correlates with the exhibit. It will be available for free at both galleries.
