WASHOE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
Earlier this month, the Washoe County Public Defender’s Office hosted an international delegation of judges. The visit was organized through the U.S. State Department International Visitor Leadership Program and the Northern Nevada International Center.
The judges met with the Washoe County public defender and discussed indigent defense systems where legal aid funding is less available, strategies for assisting unrepresented litigants and the role of the court and state in managing the legal affairs of persons who have lost mental capacity.
“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, which was a decision declaring a constitutional right to counsel in all serious criminal cases,” said Washoe County Public Defender Jeremy Bosler. “The case also recognized the critical role defense counsel plays in our adversarial system. It was truly an honor to host the delegation and share ideas regarding indigent defense during this historic 50th year of the right to counsel.”
The Washoe County Public Defender’s Office regularly hosts programs through the Visitor Leadership Program. The latest visit included judges from Egypt, Slovenia, Albania, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Greece, Suriname and Croatia.
