harryreid1-150x150-8273246-4202389WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sen. Harry Reid today announced the University of Nevada has been awarded a $2.3 million grant over the next five years for its role in operating the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS).

The ANSS monitors all seismic events including earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions. It gathers critical data used to assess building structure and infrastructure stability along with providing time-sensitive information that emergency response personnel can utilize in their training exercises.

“The unexpected tragedy in Haiti rattled our hearts and defied our perception of safety,” said Reid. “ANSS is a necessary step in order to protect Nevadans against the devastation of natural disasters and provide the nation with advance notice of seismic activity.”
