Workshop for business analysts planned

The University of Nevada, Reno is hosting a hands-on workshop Sept. 29 to help business analysts understand regional data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

“Navigating the Nevada Economy” will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Joe Crowley Student Union on the UNR campus. An evening symposium and dinner will feature Gary Zimmerman from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco discussing national economic trends and Dr. Keith Schwer from the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas examining trends from a state perspective. That runs from 5:15 p.m. to 8:05 p.m. in Ballroom C.

Organizers say the conference would be useful to a wide range of professionals, including health care administrators, business journalists, regional planners, budget analysts, scientists, economists, grant writers, Realtors, bankers, government economists and lawmakers.

The cost of the daytime workshop is $65 per person, $55 per person if registering four or more people. The cost covers a continental breakfast and box lunch. The cost of the evening event is $50 per person, $40 per person for groups of four or more. Free parking will be available on the top floor of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex, which is a short walk from the student union.

Participants are encouraged to bring laptop computers to the workshop. Using a wireless connection, they will be able to evaluate and analyze regional data from the Nevada Regional Economic Analysis Project.

The workshop has been approved by the Nevada Department of Taxation Appraiser Certification Board for six CEUs and by the International Economic Development Council for credit toward recertification.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis; the Nevada Regional Economic Analysis Project; and various UNR colleges, including the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, the College of Business, Cooperative Extension, the Center for Regional Studies, the Nevada Small Business Development Center and the Center for Economic Development.
