SIERRA CLUB NEWS RELEASE
LAS VEGAS–Last week, the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club rebuked GOP Congressional candidate Danny Tarkanian for his stance that “nuclear waste storage should be considered as a way of diversifying the state economy.”
Tarkanian’s remarks were made on Thursday in the course of a broadcast from the Vegas PBS studio, where he was debating Democratic Candidate and State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford. The two are vying for the newly created Congressional seat in Nevada’s District 4.
In Reno, Toiyabe Chapter Chair Erik Holland responded pointedly, “We spent years fighting to keep Yucca Mountain and all of Nevada nuclear free. If Tarkanian really believes our state should become a nuclear dump, we say ‘dump Tarkanian.’”
In Las Vegas, the chapter’s political chair, Taj Ainlay, was just as outspoken. “This is exactly why the Sierra Club has endorsed Steven Horsford for Congress,” he said. “Tarkanian obviously doesn’t care about the safety of Nevada’s environment and its citizens. A nuclear-free Nevada is the only option moving forward.”
During the PBS debate, Horsford stated that he opposes nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain. The election will be decided on November 6, with early voting running from October 20 through November 2.
