This October 20-26, 2024, Washoe County Library System will celebrate the Friends of Washoe County Library as part of the 19th annual National Friends of Libraries Week.

Founded in 1980, the Friends of Washoe County Library is a member-supported 501(c)(3) Nevada nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating, fundraising, and providing support for Washoe County Library System. To date, the Friends has donated over $2 million to the library system in support of technology, materials, special events, and more.

“In 2023, the Friends raised $87,500 to support our libraries,” Public Information and Development Officer Jamie Hemingway said. “Their devoted volunteers work hard to provide funding that enhances library services every year.”

During the Summer Reading Challenge, Friends funding brought unforgettable events such as Young Shakespeare: As You Like It presented by D.G. Menchetti Education Programs, Wild Things presented by Conservation Ambassadors, and magician Phil Ackerly to library audiences.

The Friends’ fundraising efforts include a bimonthly book sale which takes place next to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall, 4001 S. Virginia St. Patrons can support the Friends by shopping at the book sale or by shopping online at the Friends’ Amazon store.

The public can also support the Friends through membership dues. Over 600 community members contribute annually to the nonprofit, benefitting from early admission to the book sales, discounted memberships at local partnership organizations, and more. Several of these contributors volunteer their time to assist with the book sales. To learn more about membership and volunteer opportunities, contact the Friends at 775-324-5522 or visit washoelibraryfriends.org

National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. United for Libraries supports those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, and brings together library Trustees/board members, advocates, Friends Groups, library Foundations, and those who work with them into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries.
