Fire officials on Tuesday evening urged residents to prepare for evacuations as dangerous fire conditions are expected to get dramatically worse on Wednesday.
Charlie Moore, fire chief for Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, and Dave Cochran, fire chief for the City of Reno, issued a joint warning Tuesday evening about the threat posed by the Davis Fire, which erupted at Davis Creek Regional Park on Saturday.
“The fire weather is going to change significantly tomorrow, and we need you to listen to evacuation messages,” Moore said on a social media video.
A Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) alert, which is more severe than a red flag warning, has been issued for the area. Officials expect the Davis Fire to spread rapidly, potentially up to seven miles in a single day.
“We fully expect that the Davis Fire is going to move significantly,” Moore stated. “We’re going to push out information about evacuation zones tomorrow morning, Wednesday, Sept. 11, and we need you to take those messages very seriously.”
The chiefs did not specify which specific areas – other than west Reno – but at a community meeting, also Tuesday evening, state and federal officials said portions of south and west Reno may have to evacuate.
The Perimetermap.com website shows areas west of Interstate 580 and just south of Mccarran boulevard are under an evacuation warning.
Officials stressed the importance of having a plan in place and being ready to leave at a moment’s notice. They said to prepare to leave Wednesday morning.
“Prepare a go-bag, be ready to go, be ready to be out of your home for at least three days,” Cochran said. They said to pack supplies for three days including medications, important documents, food for pets.
“The best modeling shows that this fire is going to move at least three and a half miles, but it could move as many as seven miles,” Moore added.

The #DavisFire is expected to move significantly tomorrow, 9/11. Take this seriously. If you receive the notice to evacuate, don't wait.
