Washoe County officials on Monday said they completed phase 3 of the Nevada Cares Campus by opening a 20,000-square-foot Welcome Center. The center is the final piece of new construction at the massive homeless shelter.

The 15-acre site now houses an emergency shelter, a Safe Camp, a resource center, the welcome center and a dining hall. More housing units are under construction.

The Welcome Center includes intake and training areas, case management, therapy and staff offices. It also serves diversion efforts to help people find safe housing.

Community groups and services, including the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, the state employment department, Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, Northern Nevada Public Health and the Veterans Administration, have an on-site presence.

The $18 million welcome center was funded by federal money secured by Nevada’s bipartisan congressional delegation and federal COVID funds. Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto provided certificates, while Congressman Mark Amodei attended the ribbon-cutting event. Governor Joe Lombardo’s office also spoke in support.

Phase 4, a 50-unit supportive housing unit, is under construction and expected to open in 2025.
