Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space is scheduled to debut its new public recreation facility during a free public event Saturday in Spanish Springs.

The grand opening of “The Hive at Lazy 5” takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at Lazy 5 Regional Park, 7100 Pyramid Way. The Hive was repurposed from a sand storage building to a 5,000 square-foot facility that can be used for activities that include basketball, pickleball and community events, according to Washoe County.

Donors and project sponsors included Reno/Sparks Association of Realtors, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Kelly-Moore Paints, Reno Paint Mart, Home Depot and Vegas Asphalt Paving.

A food truck, live music, mobile pub, a basketball shootout, skateboarder show, crafts, martial arts demonstrations, a mural painting, and pickleball demonstrations are among activities planned Saturday. Pickleball is played with paddles and resembles a combination of tennis, table tennis, and badminton.
